Extinction
Title: Extinction
Medium: Block Print Size: 25 cm x 15 cm November 2016 Exhibit Text:
Alicia focuses on creating a block print to bring awareness to endangered and extinct animals, because of human actions. She was influenced by Sally Scott's prints and her ability to explore serious issues through her artwork. |
Process
Artist/Inspiration: I wanted to focus on things other than myself, because I tend to relate all my pieces to the theme of emotion. I wanted to focus on the effects of humans, so I studied endergered animals, and why they are becoming endangered. I came across Sally Scott, and was interested in her work and wanted to recreate one of her pieces to bring awareness to these issues that go unnoticed.
Intentions: My intention was to bring awareness to the damage caused by the human population. |
The first thing I did was create a sketch, then I drew it again on the block print.

Meaning Behind Piece
The meaning behind this piece is to bring awareness to endangered and extinct animals because of human actions. In America, 80% of large animals became extinct around the time human presence first arrived. Extinction is increasing by a rate of 100 to 1,000 times higher than the natural extinction rate. (Website: http://people.uwec.edu/jolhm/eh4/extinction/CausesLink.html) As the human population grows, the animal population will continue to decrease because of the effects of humans including: pollution, climate change, and depletion of land and habitats.
Artist Inspiration
Sally Scott is a printmaker, painter, and art teacher in Zimbabwe. She has a huge appreciation for all life and the frailties of human condition. Through her artwork she shes to express serious issues. Her art mostly consists of landscapes and her adventures in the wilderness.
Website: http://www.sallyscott.co.za/about-us/sally-scott I was inspired by her print "White Rhino" so I recreated it in my block print "Extinction" I used a variety of lines within my block print similar to hers to show the wrinkles and texture in the rhino. |
Reflection
This was the second block print I've made and I can see the improvement. I was able to add more designs, to make the piece seem like it has some type of movement. I seemed to like my sketch more than the block print. If I were to do this again, I would have tried to create a drawing because thats is a medium I haven't tried these past two years. Another thing I would do it make more prints, to get a cleaner image, since in some areas there is black when there wasn't suppose to be.
ACT Reflection
1) Sally Scott's prints look very realistic because of her use of lines, although my print doesn't look so real I incorporated the lines to create texture.
2) The overall approach is to create a block print to bring awareness to extinct and endangered animals. I wanted to make a block print for this piece being that it can be printed multiple times.
3) While researching I discovered that humans are the cause of many animal groups becoming extinct. While there homes are being destroyed the extinction rate is increasing quickly.
4) The central theme of this piece was animal awareness, and how humans affect other living things.
5) I learned that as the human population increases, the animal population deceases. Humans cause destruction of their habitats, pollution, and climate change.
