Organic vs. Industrial
Title: Bottled Up
Medium: Glass Size: 11 cm x 11 cm x 30 cm February 2016 Exhibit Text: Alicia focuses on creating a piece involving both organic and industrial aspects. It also includes personal experience and beliefs. This piece is based off an inspiration of Joel Peter Witkin's photography, and its meaning. All objects were found to create this piece. |
Process
First, I listed organic and industrial objects.
Organic - Humans - Plants - Food Industrial - Metal - Glass - Wood After, I began to create sketches combining both organic and industrial aspects. |
I decided to create a human head containing bottles which resemble thoughts. At first I wanted to create the head out of clay, but realized it would be hard to show the bottles, so I used glass instead. The head and bottles with corks were bought, and the 'thoughts' inside of the bottles are colored paper.
Once, I filled all the bottles with paper I had to arrange them so that they stayed toward the top of the head. Also so that all the red bottles surrounded the white one.

Meaning Behind Piece
The meaning of my piece is to represent the power of words, and how they remain within someone's head. Everyday is different, some are exciting and adventurous, some we meet new people, and some are completely horrible, and it seems those are the days most clearly remembered. Same goes with conversations, if I were asked to give a time I got into a argument, I could give the time, place, who it involved, and word for word what was said. Although we experience many good memories, the bad ones always seem to overpower them. That being said, mean and hurtful words overpower nice and gentle ones. I show this by surrounding a self thought (white paper) by many hurtful thoughts of others (red paper) around it. Once a person is made fun of or talked down too, that moment will stick with them, and could affect they way they see their self. The white paper represents a persons thoughts about their self, while the red paper represents the thoughts of others put into their head. Within this piece I am trying to show how words affects others self-esteem, yet to have a high self-esteem you need to put your thoughts before others.

Reflection
Like every project, it was very hard for me to form ideas. I that I tend to over think everything; I know exactly what I want, but not quite sure how to do it. However, after a lot of brainstorming and figuring out a way for me to show what I wanted to say, it turned out to be a extremely easy project to construct. Throughout the year I've noticed my passion for the human face, but the mind as well, so I decided to include both. At first I wanted to sculpt a human head out of clay, and use a bottle as thought, since it is known to "holds something". However, I struggled how to show the bottle, so I began to research human heads and came across clear mannequin heads. This formulated more ideas and I decided to fill a glass head with many bottles to be able to represent many thoughts. At first, I filled the glass bottles with many colors representing different feelings. But I felt this didn't clearly show what I wanted to come across, so went down to two colors: a single white color being a self thought, surrounded by many red colors being other negative thoughts. Overall, I was happy with the outcome, and its ability of being able to express its meaning.
