Summer Project
Title: Emotions
Medium: Charcoal on Paper Size: 86.36 cm x 83.82 cm 10 August 2016 |
Exhibition Text
These 12 self portraits were created from an inspiration of Roy Lichtenstein's use of bold black lines to intensify emotion within his artwork. The goal was to create a series of emotions using different facial expressions using charcoal pencils and paper. All aspects of this piece were made. |
Process
My ideas about artists/ inspirations, and intentions.
Artists/ Inspiration: I was interested in the theme of emotion, and while researching I came across Roy Lichtenstein, a pop artist who intensifies emotion within his artwork using vibrant colors and black lines.

Intentions: My intention was to use a medium I was unfamiliar with. I choose to use charcoal because I never used it before, and also because it is never bold and I thought it would best replicate Lichtenstein's use of bold lines in his work.
Before creating this piece I took multiple photographs of myself making different facial expressions. I decided on the 12 that I have experienced throughout my life including: shocked, angry, excited, serious, disgusted, silly, irritated, moody, confused, happy, surprised, and annoyed. After I uploaded them onto Microsoft word and cropped the size so they would all be similar, then I changed them to be black and white. Next, I printed them and used light to trace the lines and facial features I wanted to emphasize on a separate piece of paper. Then I used the charcoal pencils to make the lines bolder and more dramatic to replicate Lichtenstein's use of it in his work.

Reflection
The most difficult part about this project was using a material I was unfamiliar with. It was difficult using the charcoal pencils because it would smear everytime I slightly touched it. The first portrait I created I had to redo about three times. Overall I am satisfied with the way the charcoal portraits turned out; however, next time I would want to add more detail.

2. The overall approach is to develop a variety of emotions using bold black lines similar to Lichtenstein, to express them.
3. While creating this piece, I came to the conclusion that people tend to hide emotions because of the way others react to them.
4. The central theme of this piece is emotion, like wise the idea of Lichtenstein's artwork including "Hopeless", "Crying Girl", "Happy Tears", "Scream" and "Drowning Girl".
5. Lichtenstein's artwork was meant to show irony towards media and how its known to shape people and their emotions.
